“Failure” of Congress has led to ongoing problem of insurgency in India, says surrendered HNLC leader

Commenting on the Government’s stand on “peace talks” with militant outfits, the surrendered cadre said that the invitation of the State Government for a dialogue would never fructify by issuing statement in the media.

The general secretary of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), who surrendered before the Deputy Chief Minister later, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew has blamed the Indian National Congress (INC) for problem of insurgency across the country.

Thangkhiew, a resident of Mawlai Kynton Massar in Shillong, joined the HALC in August 1987 and held the post of General secretary and was involved in Political mobilsation.

In a major boost to the Meghalaya Police, the General Secretary of the banned militant outfit — Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surrendered before the Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong and DGP, RP Agarwal here on Thursday.

It may be reminded that the encounter led to the death of one NDFB (S) militant during the cross fire while another from the same gang was lynched by an angry mob after being discovered while the rest were able to flee.

Almost 2 months after security forces clashed with militants in the thick jungles of Garo Hills in the month of August, one of the militants, involved in the encounter, belonging to the A’chik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA), surrendered to the East Garo Hills (EGH) police at the Rongjeng PS yesterday.

Meghalaya: ” No threat to MDA Govt.”, asserts NPP state President

Shillong: The NPP State president, W.R. Kharlukhi has said that there is no threat to the present MDA Government while asserting there are no differences between UDP and NPP.

Meghalaya | Durga Temple clash: Situation under control after HC allows permanent priest for rituals

The UDP working president, Bindo Mathew Lanong had yesterday hinted that there may be instability in the MDA Government if there is no consensus for the candidate of the UDP.

“It may bring instability. But I or Jemino (Mawthoh) will not try to (bring instability),” Lanong had stated.

“I want to make it clear that there is no threat to the MDA Government. We will resolve the issue of the common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat,” Dr Kharlukhi said.

He also said that the top leadership of the UDP and NPP are in continuous touch.

“The UDP had reaffirmed its commitment to support the MDA Government till the end of the term,” NPP state president said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader, Prestone Tynsong has refused to comment on the remarks made by UDP hinting on the possible instability in the MDA if the issue on the consensus candidates is not resolved.
