Meghalaya: Elaborate arrangements for polls tomorrow as campaigning ends

The campaign for the February 27 Assembly polls in Meghalaya came to an end yesterday evening.

SHILLONG, Feb 26: In a first, Meghalaya will have 67 all women polling stations manned by women polling officials and women polling agents plus medals for five early voters in each polling station.

Meghalaya DGP, SB Singh was in town to review the law and order situation after the encounter killing of GNLA chief, Sohan D Shira, today and he stated that the next target for the state’s security forces was now the second in command of the ULFA – I, Drishti Rajkhowa.

Rajkhowa had been a close aide of the slain GNLA chief, providing safe havens in Bangladesh for GNLA cadres and is also involved in training and supply of arms. The two outfits operated in tandem across Garo Hills and in parts of Khasi Hills.

Poll bound Meghalaya has witnessed a lot of mayhem in the recent past, thanks to the activities of the dreaded GNLA, the Garo populace lived in fear for almost two decades until the ‘Most Wanted’ man, Sohan D Shira was shot dead on February 25, thanks to the efforts of the SF10 commandos. Following his encounter, the body of the slain commander in chief of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Sohan D Shira, was today laid to rest at the village of Chasatgre in East Garo Hills on the other side of the Simsang River.

Shira had been the most wanted militant in the state carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakhs on his head in 2015 and his death has dealt a body blow to militancy in Garo Hills. His death also came 6 days after the killing of NCP candidate, Jonathone N Sangma in an IED blast attributed to the GNLA.

Rs 12 lakh seized from Ri-Bhoi two days ahead of polls

The officials of the Election Department seized cash amounting to around Rs 12 lakh in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday.

Informing this on Sunday, Ri-Bhoi district Deputy Commissioner and the District Election Office, CP Gotmare informed that the cash was seized from different locations.

“Our Static Surveillance Teams in Ri-Bhoi have seized cash amounting to Rs 12.39 lakh on Saturday,” Gotmare informed.

The district election officer informed that the cash were seized from two different locations-Nongpoh and Jorabat.

Gotmare said that the Static Surveillance Teams first intercepted a car at Nongpoh and seized Rs 5.96 lakh from the occupant of the car.

Later from Jorabat Rs 1 lakh, Rs 1, 43, 600 and Rs 4 lakh totalling to Rs 6, 43, 600 were seized from three different persons.


 

Meghalaya: Assistant commandant shot dead by constable for not being granted leave

In what may be termed as a shocking incident, an assistant commandant was shot dead by a constable for not being granted leave.

As per reports, the firing incident took place at B-6 UID NO. 812 RPF Company at their camp Mini Secretariat Mawkyrwat whereby Assistant Commandant Mukesh.C.Tyagi was shot dead by Constable Arjun Deshwal by his service AK rifle. In the scuffle, a constable identified as Joginder Kumar received bullet injury in his arm. He was sent to NEIGRIHMS hospital in Shillong for further treatment. Minor injuries were received by Inspector Pradeep Meena and Sub Inspector Om Prakash Yadav.

Sources informed that the accused constable was denied to proceed on leave due to which he took the drastic step. The accused has been arrested and his rifle seized. The dead body has been sent to NEIGRIMS for postmortem.
