Crime against children in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya has witnessed a surge with 17 cases under POCSO Act being registered from January this year till date. out of which only 3 cases have been charge sheeted while 14 cases are being investigated; 13 persons have been arrested so far only in 2018 itself for sexual offences against children.
“It has been observed that there is a perceptible rise in crime against children in the district,” West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said.
Syiem informed that just yesterday, an FIR was received that on May 13 at 9:00 pm, one 12-year-old minor boy was abducted by one person and was sexually assaulted.
In this regard, a case vide Jowai PS Case No. 107(5)2018 u/s 23 JJ Act r/w Sec 3(a)/4 POCSO Act was registered and on investigation one Sanki Ksoo was identified and arrested on Monday. “He is now remanded to Judicial custody,” said the SP.
Similarly on the same day, another case was reported from Khliehtyrshi, Moopyllaitsyiar where a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by one Deibor Talang (36) since 2014.
In this regard, a case vide Jowai PS Case No. 106(5)2018 u/s 5(l)/6 POCSO Act is registered and investigation is on. “The accused person has, however, absconded and efforts are being made to track and arrest him,” Syiem said.
