What could be termed as the last nail in the coffin of the GNLA, Meghalaya police successfully brought down its leader Sohan D Shira, who was shot dead by the elite forces of the state police- SF 10 on Saturday morning near Dobu and Sudugre in East Garo Hills district.
Highly placed source in the Meghalaya police informed that the operation was on since yesterday after police received inputs of the presence of GNLA militants including their Commander -In-Chief Sohan D Shira.
“On receiving the information, our team ventured into the area where the militants were present. On seeing the police approaching the area, the militants started firing leading our forces to retaliate and in the encounter, Sohan was shot dead,” police source said.
Police informed that last night, information was received about the probable location of GNLA militants group comprising of Sohan D Shira, ULFA (I) second in command Drishti Rajkhowa and other cadres somewhere near Dobu Anchengbok an Bilwatgre village.
Accordingly a team of SF-10 Commandos were sent to search the suspected location. At around 11:30 a.m. while the team reached a hillock they came under fire from suspected GNLA militants.
The ops team retaliated and there was a heavy exchange of fire. Once the firing subsided search of the P.O. was carried out and the dead body of a slain militant was recovered which is suspected to be that of the C-in-C of the outfit, Sohan D Shira.
One H&K rifle with magazines, one pistol, gelatine sticks, detonators, laptop etc. were recovered from the spot. Operations are underway to apprehend the rest of the cadres.
It may be mentioned that the operation to eliminate the GNLA in their stronghold like East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills, called Operation Hillstorm started way back in 2014.
And after almost after 5 years, the attempt to catch the elusive Sohan D Shira, was made possible today, just days after the IED blast in Williamnagar which killed an NCP candidate Johnathone N Sangma along with three others.
Soon after the Sunday IED attack, police have been on the move and conducted several operations in the area after it was revealed by a former GNLA cadre who surrendered before the BSF recently about the presence of the militants in the area and the intention of Sohan to create terror in Garo Hills with an aim to sabotage the ensuing assembly polls in the state.
