Following complaints that Dagal police assaulted him in the lock-up, East Garo Hills district superintendent of police RTG Momin has ordered a probe into the alleged custodial assault and death of village school teacher Hillary Ch Momin during custody.
A report has been ordered to be produced in a week’s time.
The incident took place when police led by Dagal outpost in-charge N Nongkhlaw picked up an inebriated Momin from the market area on the night of August 4 for creating public nuisance.
Momin was consequently locked up for the night. He was released the next afternoon and passed away a week later, triggering angry villagers to blame the police for the death.
A separate probe has also been ordered by the district administration following the FIR.
