SHILLONG | Nov 10:
A selfie of the elected Ward Commissioner of Shillong Cantonment Board, Vikash Gupta, who was arrested on Saturday on rape charges, went viral on social media with questions on usability of cellphone inside a lock-up being raised by concerned citizens.
By looking at the picture, it gives the impression that the rape accused had taken the pictures inside the lock-up of Sadar police station.
Gupta was arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly raping an 18-yr-old girl in Shillong.
Many of the people who saw this picture have started raising questions how a rape accused was allowed to take selfies inside the lock up.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Claudia A. Lyngwa clarified that the selfies taken by Vikash Gupta was not inside the lock-up.
According to her, he might have taken the selfie at the time when he was brought to the police station.
“All the accused were always kept in the area of general room when they were initially brought to the police station. There are many formalities which need to be completed before the accused is put inside the lock up. He (Vikash) must have taken the picture and shared in WhatsApp during this period,” East Khasi Hills SP said.
She said that the background which was shown in the picture is only the outer portion adding that the lock-up is deep inside.
