The newly elected MLA from Williamnagar, Marcuise Marak was sworn in as the new member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly by Deputy Speaker, Timothy D Shira in the old Assembly building at Khyndai Lad here on Monday.
Marak, who emerged victorious in the just concluded election in Williamnagar by beating his closest rival, Sengbath R Marak by nearly 5000 votes, is the 20th NPP legislator in the House of 60.
The swearing in ceremony was also be attended by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Home Minister James Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Addressing media persons after the swearing-in-ceremony today, the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma thanked the people of Williamnagar for reposing their faith in the party and the MDA government led by the NPP.
Later, talking to TNT-The Northeast Today, Marcuise Marak listed out his priority areas with connectivity and infrastructure amongst his top agendas. “I have discussed the issues concerning Williamnagar with the chief minister and hoped that these problems will solved at the earliest,” he said adding that drinking water, youth empowerment and unemployment are other key areas which need to be addressed.
When asked whether the infighting within the Congress was one of the key factors which led to his victory, the newly elected legislator from the NPP replied in the affirmative.
“The infighting within the Congress has provoked its followers to associate with the NPP and of course, we welcomed them with open arms,” said Marcuise.
Besides the above mentioned agendas, Marcuise also stated that insurgency is one of the areas which needs to be addressed while maintaining that though, militant activities have dropped in the state, we still have to deal with other forces like the fall-outs of the GNLA — which included splinter groups, miscreants, extortionists, etc.
“I have discussed the same with the Chief Minister and this is a very serious issue as it concerns the safety and security of our people and one of the things that we can do is to empower the youths and prevent them from going astray,” said the Williamnagar legislator.
It may be mentioned that the NPP managed to snatch Williamnagar from the Congress’s grasp and a ‘dismayed’ Congress has blamed its leader Mukul Sangma for the embarrassing defeat.
The infighting and conflict within the Congress party has certainly paved way for the NPP to get an upper hand in the poll battle.
