TURA | Nov 18, 2018:

Eight years after a pregnant wife was murdered by her husband in the village of Bolchimdagre in South Garo Hills in 2010, Meghalaya Police cracked the case after the murderer was finally arrested in Shillong on November 15.

One Amison M Sangma of the village of Rimrangpara in SGH was arrested on Nov 15 from the city after evading police for close to 8 years. The accused had been charged with murdering his pregnant wife Melkuritha Sangma of the village of Bolchimdagre in the year 2010.

Sangma had been changing locations frequently and was thus able to give police the slip all these years. His luck, however, ran out and he finally was taken into custody at Malki within city limits.

The case against Sangma has already been charge-sheeted. The case, which was earlier gathering dust was worked on by a team supervised by Ravi K Sangma (MPS, SDPO – Chokpot) and the 2nd OC of Chokpot PS, Sub Inspector, E Ch Momin. The case fell under Chokpot PS.

“The case had been charge-sheeted and as such the murder suspect status was absconding. When the case was picked up once again, information came through that Sangma may be in Shillong. As the SI, Momin, was earlier posted in Shillong, he activated his sources and circulated details of the suspect,” said superintendent of police, SGH, Abraham T Sangma.

The circulation of the case details wielded results quickly after there were reports of suspect being seen in Malki where he was working petty jobs.

A team was rushed from SGH to Shillong where the suspect was formally identified by the I/O of the case. He was thereafter arrested with the help of the Malki police and brought back.

This is the 2nd cold case that has been solved through the efforts of the police in Chokpot who refused to give up. Earlier too, a child who was kidnapped by her relatives and taken away was reunited through the efforts of the Chokpot police which refused to give up despite the circumstances many years after it actually happened.

“It is a proud moment for us and I would like to thank the teams for taking the effort to solve the case and to finally arrest a murderer. This will definitely bring more confidence in the justice system,” said the SP.
