In yet another major recovery, Meghalaya police on Sunday located the hidden stash of the banned militant outfit — Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). The recovered cache of weapons included the iconic 7.62 machine gun used extensively by the now deceased commander in chief of the outfit, Sohan D Shira.

It was informed that search operations by the East Garo Hills (EGH) police today led to this recovery. The recovery made today continues the efforts of the police to locate the hidden stash of the GNLA in many parts of the district with this being the 5th such recovery in about a month.

The search for the hidden weapons was assisted by local residents of many villages on the other side of the Simsang river in the district – a known GNLA stronghold.

The recoveries were made over a period of a few days in different locations of Rongbokgre and Dorengkigre in EGH.

“We recovered one 7.62 machine gun, one 7.62 SLR assault rifle, one DBBL, one DBBL barrel, eight wireless sets, thirteen wireless set batteries,  five primed IEDs in plastic containers, six twelve volts batteries for IED and five circuits for RC IED,” said superintendent of police, Ringrang TG Momin.

“The machine gun recovered is one of the iconic weapons used by Sohan to promote the outfit at the initial stage of the group. There are many pictures of him carrying the weapon that was circulated in various groups and social media,” added the SP.
