SHILLONG | March 15, 2019:

Three persons were arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF) troops from Lalghat village in West Khasi Hills district for their involvement in smuggling of a drug called ‘yaba’ tablets on March 14.

Acting on a tip-off regarding the smuggling of yaga pill yesterday, the BSF troops rushed to the spot and apprehended the three individuals identified as — Smith Ch. Sangma (22), Purno R. Marak (24) and Amiston T Sangma, all hailing from Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills.

It was informed that Amiston T Sangma was ferrying the other two from Gumaghat to Rongdu village on his bike bearing No. ML-06-4839 (Bajaj discover).

BSF troops also recovered Rs 20 lakh along with 4 mobile phones from their possession. According to BSF officials, the trio revealed that they received Rs. 20 lakh from Shillong (source of money not confirmed).

In this connection, on March 13, trio stayed in a hotel in Police Bazar Shillong. The purpose of the money is also yet to be confirmed.

“BSF has stepped up its special drive against the smugglers and intensified its operations on Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminal to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya state as well as illegal transport of money keeping in view of the forthcoming Parliamentary election,” said the BSF official.

The apprehended persons along with seized items handed over to concern department for further legal action.
