The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and the police have been accused of open collusion with timber smugglers in broad daylight in Phulbari, West Garo Hills.

The shocker of an incident took place a few days ago after a source from Chibinang informed on the open movement of timber trucks apparently in collusion with authorities during the day.

When the matter was then informed to the superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar, a police team went in search of the truck who located the vehicle before it was brought to the Phulbari PS. The truck was then handed over to the GHADC forest team in Phulbari with its ranger identified as Latif being the in-charge.

However the truck was then handed over to the same smugglers from whom it was seized, putting paid to any hope of action against timber smuggling taking place.

According to sources, the excuse given by the local police in the case was that the case had reached a compromise between the complainants and the smuggling party leading to the release of the truck. However when contacted on the matter, the complainants stated clearly that no such compromise was made and the entire act was done by the authorities.

Reacting to the allegations, Dr Kumar said that a case report would be sought by him from the Phulbari PS and action would follow accordingly.

“This is serious and will be dealt with seriously. Firstly we need to find out what exactly happened before any further action is initiated,” said Dr Kumar.
