In yet another kidnapping case reported from the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, a ginger merchant hailing from Krishnai in Goalpara district of Assam was kidnapped this morning allegedly by a group of 5-6 small time criminals from near the village of Rongsak in East Garo Hills (EGH).

The abducted trader has been identified as one Tapos Majhi (37).

According to police sources, the merchant, who was on his way to the weekly market of Rongsak, was abducted from near the village of Bansam Awe.

The village falls under the newly created police station of Chiading in EGH.

“He was kidnapped by a bike borne gang near the village of Bansam Awe with the criminals numbering about 5-6. They stopped the vehicle in which he was travelling and took him at gun point. All the kidnappers had their faces concealed with cloth during the incident,” said superintendent of police, Ringrang TG Momin.

One of the bikes used during the kidnapping was later recovered along the same route.

Police sources felt the kidnapping was the handiwork of criminals who may have got their hands on some weapons.

A search operation to rescue the victim is currently under way.
