In yet another tragic incident, four people lost their lives while six others were injured in an accident which took place at Mawpun village under Ri Bhoi district on Monday morning.
When enquired, RB police said that the accident took place between a tourist vehicle (Sumo) and an Ashoke Leyland truck at 8 am today along the Shillong By-pass stretch at Mawpun near Umroi village when the fateful tourist vehicle, which was heading to Shillong with maximum 10 people inside including the driver, was allegedly rammed by the truck claiming the lives of 4 people — 3 females and one male (driver).
When asked whether over-speeding caused the accident, police said that as of now, they are yet to ascertain the cause of the accident. “We will come to know about the reason only from the injured persons, who are now undergoing treatment in Shillong Civil Hospital,” Ri Bhoi SP (Traffic), Dangsan Khyriem said.

The identities of the deceased persons are yet to be known as police are currently conducting the prelim investigations. When asked about the driver of the truck, Khyriem said that the truck driver has absconded.
Amongst the injured persons was also a small boy, who escaped unharmed but nevertheless, was also referred to the hospital for medical treatment.
It may be mentioned that this is the second accident in Meghalaya within a week, wherein precious lives were lost. Two days back, a jail police lost his life while another was severely injured when their bike was hit by a Mercedes driven by the son of Health Minister, AL Hek at 4th Furlong, Shillong.
