The by-poll to the South Tura Assembly seat, scheduled to be held on August 23, is set to witness a battle of four candidates including Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma after after two more nominations were filed today afternoon.

Two independent candidates, former South Tura MLA John Leslee K Sangma and Kris Kabul A Sangma completed their nominations this afternoon, the last day of filing nominations. They joined the CM and Congress contestant, Charlotte W Momin in trying to win votes to be the MLA representing South Tura constituency.

The South Tura by-poll was necessitated due to the resignation of Agatha Sangma, who sacrificed her seat to accommodate her brother and current CM, Conrad who needs to be elected within 6 months from the appointment.

The nominations were filed today in the presence of Returning Officer, Sabrella Marak at the West Garo Hills DC office premises in Tura. John Leslee was the first to file his nomination after which the other Independent candidate, Kris Kabul Sangma filed his.

Both candidates had earlier resigned from their parties to contest the upcoming election after their parties pledged their support for the Chief Minister. Leslee resigned from the NCP while Kabul resigned from the UDP.

The scrutiny of nomination of papers will be undertaken tomorrow with the last date of withdrawal of nomination being Aug 9.

South Tura goes to polls on Aug 23 with the results to be declared on Aug 27 along with the Ranikor seat in South West Khasi Hills.

Speaking on the occasion of his nomination, Kris Kabul said the major issue for him would be the land reservation policy and whether the government would continue to play politics on the issue. He also added that he has been reaching out to the people to spread his message on what he wants to do for the constituency.

“I am giving it my best shot and will take my mandate to the people,” said Kris Kabul.
