The United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Tuesday said that the party would like to see Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma win the upcoming bye-election in South Tura.

“We have made our commitment to support the Chief Minister for the South Tura bye-poll. We are hopeful that he is going to win the election,” Mawthoh said while talking to media person after the special Central Executive Committee meeting of the party here today.

Informing that the party top functionaries including party president Dr Donkupar Roy had met leaders of the party in Garo Hills, he said that they have agreed to abide by the decision of the party high command in supporting Sangma’s candidature.

Mawthoh also clarified that the party leader from Garo Hills, Kabul Sangma has quit the party to contest as an Independent candidate from South Tura. Kabul filed his nomination yesterday along with former MLA, John Leslee K Sangma.

Meanwhile, Mawthoh has stated that the bye-election in Ranikor constituency is extremely important for the UDP for strengthening the party support-based in Ranikor.

“We would like to win Ranikor in order to increase our number of seats in this MDA Government.,” he said.

The UDP general secretary further claimed that the party candidate, Pius Marwein is emerging as a very strong contender to win the bye-election.
