SHILLONG | Aug 01, 2019:
United Democratic Party (UDP) senior working president, Bindo Mathew Lanong said that the family members and supporters of late Dr Donkupar Roy would be having a consultation on the probable candidate to contest from the vacant Shella seat.
“Yes, there is a general feeling that someone from the family should contest. But the family members and the supporters would be having a consultation on who is fit enough to step into Dr Donkupar’s shoes,” Lanong said here today.
According to him, the family members and the supporters would be informing the party about their decision.
“The party would then sit after getting the feedback from them,” Lanong said. When asked about the possible candidate from the party who will assume the Speaker post, he said that this issue also needs a thorough discussion.
“It is too early to discuss on this matter. But the party will ensure that there is consensus on the MLAs who take over as the new Speaker,” he said.
Replying to a query, UDP senior working president said that the decision on the party president is likely to be decided during the upcoming General Council meeting of the party to be held in September.
“As per practice, the senior most member of the party will assume charge as the acting president of th party,” he added.
Earlier, while paying tributes during the condolence meeting at Dr Donkupar Roy residence in Sohra, senior UDP MLA, Metbah Lyngdoh had suggested that someone from the family of late Dr Donkupar should step into his shoes and carry forward the UDP leader’s legacy.
Lanong had also echoed the same view that someone from the family should come forward to shoulder the responsibilities in completing his unfinished tasks.
